WA surf talent targeted

To celebrate the launch of Western Australia’s only dedicated surf magazine, Surfwest, budding photographers from every region have the chance to see their shots published statewide.

Due to launch in September, Surfwest is long overdue, according to director, Richard Stone.

“WA has world class waves, world class surfers and world class photographers – creating a voice for them can only benefit the local surfing community,” he said.

“We are tired of seeing photos in national magazines of interstate and international surfers riding our waves. There simply isn’t enough coverage of WA surfing talent. Surfwest has been developed to fill the need.

“The magazine will also provide a much needed advertising medium to access the large WA surfing market.”

Stone is keen to showcase not only local surfers, but photographic talent as well.

In anticipation of the magazine launch, the SurfWest editorial team is looking for emerging photographers from across the state – from Broome to Esperance – to submit up to 10 surfing shots.

Winners will be selected in two categories: Surfing Action and Surf Lifestyle. Each will receive:

  • $1000 ($500 cash and $500 in prizes)
  • publication of their photo(s) in Surfwest
  • publication of their photo(s) on the Surfwest website
  • the chance to become an ongoing paid contributor to Surfwest (subject to standard of photos submitted)

To encourage new talent, photographers who have previously received payment for use of their images in Australian surf magazines are unable to enter.

Notes for editors:
Richard Stone has long been an active member of the WA surf community, specifically as a life member of City Beach Surfriders’ Club, a state coach, judge and manager, a promoter of surfing competitions, and an activist protecting the rights and activities of WA surfers. For example, his two petitions overturned the entry fee into South West beaches in 1999.
